Middle Bass Island

Go for 1–2 nights if you want a quiet Lake Erie island with a winery ruin, a state-park campground and golf-cart roads; skip if you need bars, shops or a car-free ferry network.

Middle Bass is the low-key middle island of the Lake Erie group: about 3 km across, one ferry dock, one general store, a former winery and a state park. It suits a single overnight or a long day trip from Catawba or Put-in-Bay, not a full week. Ferries run several times a day in summer and thin out in spring and fall, so the season sets the plan more than the sights do.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The island is small enough to walk, and bikes and golf carts are the usual way to cover more ground. Cars are allowed but speed limits are low. Bring what you need: there is one general store and no fuel station on the island.

Door to door: About 30–45 min including boarding

Sonny-S passenger ferry from the Middle Bass dock

The island's grocery store and most of its restaurants and bars are here. Weekday sailings stop in the early evening; weekends run later — check the last boat.

Door to door: 2.5–4 h

Ferry to Catawba or Put-in-Bay, then a second ferry

Possible but slow; better as its own overnight than a day trip from Middle Bass.

Door to door: About 30–60 min

Mainland ferry from the Middle Bass dock

The mainland side for supplies, restaurants and the drive to Toledo or Cleveland.

Sanduskycaution

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Ferry to Catawba, then a car or shuttle west

Doable in a day only with your own car waiting at the dock.

St. Hazard's Resort, east side

Villas for up to six, chalets for up to five and simpler cabins with a shared bath house; pool and Wi-Fi. The island's main bed base outside camping.

Near the ferry dock

Walkable to J.F. Walleyes and the Lonz Winery site; best if you arrive without a vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

A very low-crime island; the real risks are open water, weather that turns fast on Lake Erie, and thin ferry service in the shoulder season. Wear a life jacket on kayaks and paddleboards, and keep an eye on the last boat.
  • Ferry service is seasonal: several trips a day in summer, weather-dependent sailings in spring and fall, and little or nothing in winter.
  • The campground has no toilets, electricity or potable water on site; showers are at the harbormaster building.
  • The Sonny-S ferry to Put-in-Bay stops running in the early evening on weekdays and at midnight at weekends — check the last sailing before you plan a return.
  • Cell and data coverage can be patchy on the east end and at East Point; download what you need before boarding.
