Kelleys Island is Ohio's largest Lake Erie island: 256 residents, a walkable village on the south shore, a state park and the Glacial Grooves on the north half. Ferries run from Marblehead year-round and from Sandusky in season. One night is enough; two if you camp or rent a golf cart and slow down. In winter almost everything closes and the lake ice makes travel risky.

Getting around

The island is small: rent a golf cart by the hour or day, or bring a bicycle on the ferry. A car is only worth ferrying if you are staying a week or hauling camping gear. Walking works for the village and Inscription Rock; the Glacial Grooves and state park are 2–3 km north.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime and remote: the real risks are slippery exposed bedrock, cold and volatile Lake Erie water, dead cell zones on the north half, and winter ice. Tell someone your plans before hiking alone.
  • Walking on the road where a sidewalk exists carries a $100 fine from island police.
  • No hospital on the island; undeveloped areas have poor or no cell service, so 911 may not connect.
  • No lifeguard at the public beach and riptides occur in Lake Erie; swim with a buddy.
  • No pharmacy on the island: bring enough medication for the whole trip.
  • On the north shore your phone may lock onto Canadian towers and incur roaming charges; switch to airplane mode.
  • Never walk to the island over winter ice.
