Elbląg
Give Elbląg one night if you are already in Warmia-Masuria; the rebuilt Old Town plus the canal boat ride is a half-day, not a base.
Elbląg is a river port of about 127,000 people on the Elbląg River, 10 km from the Vistula Lagoon, and a former Hanseatic seaport. Its Old Town was almost entirely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque forms; the real city life sits a kilometre north in the post-war new town. Most travellers use it as a stop between Gdańsk and the Masurian Lakes, or as the start of the Elbląg-Ostróda Canal boat trip.

The Old Town sights are close together and walkable. Tram 2 links the railway station (and the adjacent bus station) with the centre and continues toward the Bażantarnia forest; buy tickets from kiosks and stamp them on boarding. Buses cover the outer districts.
