Adler is the southern district of Greater Sochi, 22 km from Sochi centre, built around the mouth of the Mzymta river and the 2014 Winter Olympics. It holds Sochi's airport, the main rail terminus for the coast, a long pebble beach and the resort strip of Kurortny Gorodok. Most travellers use it as a bed base for the sea and for day trips up to Krasnaya Polyana and the mountains.

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Buses and marshrutkas cover the district and the coast; the commuter train runs about every 30 min to Sochi station (about 30 min). Taxis are cheap if booked by app, expensive if hailed at the airport.

Safety

Adler is a busy resort district and normal beach precautions apply: watch bags on the promenade and at the market, use app taxis at night, and swim only where lifeguards are posted. Read your government's Russia travel advice before you book.
  • Summer weekends and July–August bring heavy traffic on the coast road; a 40-min bus ride can take 2 h.
  • Many small guesthouses are seasonal and close outside May–October.
