Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Acle is a small Broadland market town of about 3,000 people midway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, and the only bridge over the River Bure between Great Yarmouth and Wroxham. There is one round-tower church, a garden three miles out, a pub by the bridge and a railway station on the Norwich–Great Yarmouth line. Most travellers pass through; those who stop do it for the Broads moorings, a cheap Travelodge night or a break in the drive on the A47.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Buses X1 and X11 stop on the A47 between Norwich and Great Yarmouth; the Wherry Line train runs Norwich–Acle–Great Yarmouth. For Fairhaven Garden, Strumpshaw or the Broads villages you need a car, a bike or a taxi.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Wherry Line train from Acle station, or X1/X11 bus on the A47

Cathedral, castle and market; the obvious half-day or full-day trip.

Door to door: About 25–35 min

Wherry Line train, or X1/X11 bus along the Acle Straight

Seafront and amusements; short ride but the A47 stretch needs care if you drive.

Door to door: About 30–45 min by car

Road via the A1062 (≈ US$1,500), or train to Norwich and back out on the Bittern Line

Boat hire and the Broads; the usual reason people come to this part of Norfolk.

Cromercaution

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Road via the A47 and A140, or train via Norwich

Doable as a day out but a long one; better as an overnight on the north coast.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Road via the A47 and A149

Only with a car; the north Norfolk coast deserves its own night.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

The Street and Old Road (town centre)

Kings Head B&B, takeaways and the Co-op within a 5-minute walk; best if you arrive by train.

A47 roundabout (bypass)

Travelodge with limited free parking; only useful with a car, 15–20 min walk from the centre.

Acle Bridge

Pub and Broads moorings about 1.5 km east of the centre; quiet, riverside, no shops.

Watch out

Safety

Acle is a low-crime small town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the A47 Acle Straight, unlit riverside paths after dark and fast-moving water on the Broads.
  • The Acle Straight (single-carriageway A47 east to Great Yarmouth) is a known accident blackspot: no overtaking, watch for slow farm traffic.
  • Acle has 4G from all UK carriers but no 5G; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
  • Riverside footpaths and Broads moorings flood or turn muddy after heavy rain; wear shoes you do not mind ruining.
  • Small-town hours: takeaways open in the evening only, the art gallery closes early and some places shut one or two days a week — check before you walk out.
