Acle
Skip as a base: Acle is a 2–3 hour stop on the Wherry Line between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, or one cheap night if you are driving the A47.
Acle is a small Broadland market town of about 3,000 people midway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, and the only bridge over the River Bure between Great Yarmouth and Wroxham. There is one round-tower church, a garden three miles out, a pub by the bridge and a railway station on the Norwich–Great Yarmouth line. Most travellers pass through; those who stop do it for the Broads moorings, a cheap Travelodge night or a break in the drive on the A47.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The Acle Straight (single-carriageway A47 east to Great Yarmouth) is a known accident blackspot: no overtaking, watch for slow farm traffic.
- Acle has 4G from all UK carriers but no 5G; download maps and tickets before you arrive.
- Riverside footpaths and Broads moorings flood or turn muddy after heavy rain; wear shoes you do not mind ruining.
- Small-town hours: takeaways open in the evening only, the art gallery closes early and some places shut one or two days a week — check before you walk out.
Acle is a low-crime small town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the A47 Acle Straight, unlit riverside paths after dark and fast-moving water on the Broads.
