Yeosu is a southern-coast port city of about 274,000 people, built on a peninsula plus 317 islands, 49 of them inhabited. The centre around Jungang-dong and the harbour is compact and walkable; almost everything visitors come for sits on the Dolsan island ring road south of Dolsan Bridge, or at the Expo site east of the harbour where the KTX station is. Two nights covers the core. Three lets you add a cruise or a beach day without rushing.

Getting around

Taxis are cheap and the best way around the centre; avoid crossing Dolsan Bridge by car at peak times. Bus 111 zig-zags from the intercity bus terminal to Hyangiram via Jinnamgwan, the harbour and the Dolsan sights. Bus stop signs are mostly Korean-only, so use a map app with live bus positions.

Yeoseo-dong

Inland neighbourhood between mountains with its own small downtown, cafés and nightlife; cheaper motels.

Dolsan island (across the bridge)

Closest to Hyangiram and the ring-road sights, but the bridge is a traffic bottleneck at peak times.

Watch out

Safety

Yeosu is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are the Dolsan Bridge traffic bottleneck, slippery rocks and narrow trails at Hyangiram, and summer typhoons that cancel ferries and cruises.
  • Dolsan Bridge is one of Korea's worst traffic bottlenecks for its size: cross by bus or on foot at rush hour, not by taxi.
  • Bus stop signage is often missing or Korean-only; track your stop on a map app.
  • Hyangiram's trails are narrow, steep and low-ceilinged in places: not for claustrophobic or unsteady walkers.
  • Summer brings heavy rain and occasional typhoons; check forecasts before booking a boat cruise.
