Ravangla is a small South Sikkim town at about 2,400 m on the Gangtok–Pelling highway, used as a base for the 40 m Buddha statue at Buddha Park, short Himalayan treks and monastery and tea-garden drives. Two nights covers it; three if you add the Ralang sulphur springs in winter. Roads are slow, taxis are shared, and most kitchens close by 20:00.

Getting around

The town is walkable; everything beyond it is by shared jeep or hired taxi from the stand at the south end of the market. Agree the fare and the return time before you leave, and expect to change cars at Gyalshing for Pelling or at Jorethang for Darjeeling.

Watch out

Safety

Ravangla is quiet and low-crime; the real risks are mountain roads, monsoon landslides, altitude on the Maenam trek and getting stranded after the last jeep. Solo women generally report few problems, but avoid unlit walks after dark.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings landslides and road closures on the Gangtok–Pelling highway: check road status the day before you travel.
  • Shared jeeps leave when full and stop running by mid-afternoon; a late arrival may mean paying for a whole taxi.
  • Most hotels and kitchens close by 20:00 — eat before 19:30.
  • Treks into the Maenam sanctuary need registration at the forest office near the Buddha Park gate; a local guide is strongly advised.
  • Carry cash: ATMs in the bazar run out, and cards are rarely accepted outside hotels.
