Major city · Australia

Goulburn

Stop for one night, or two if you want the rail museum and a Bungonia walk: it is a highway town between Sydney (2 h 30 min) and Canberra (1 h).

Goulburn is a regional city of about 25,000 people on the Hume Highway, halfway between Sydney and Canberra. It was Australia's first inland city to be settled and keeps a compact heritage main street, a Gothic cathedral and a working rail roundhouse. Most travellers use it as a break in the drive, not as a destination in itself.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

The main street is short and flat enough to walk; most heritage buildings sit within 15 minutes of Belmore Park. For anything outside the centre you need a car or taxi: local buses run to the suburbs but are geared to residents, not sights. Car hire desks are in town (check opening hours before you rely on them).

Dry escarpment country above the Shoalhaven; walking trails start from Bungonia. Carry water.

Wombeyan Caves

go

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive via Taralga

The onward road to Mittagong is slow and rough inside the park; allow extra time.

Drive the Kings Highway route via Tarago and Braidwood Roads

A scenic alternative to the freeway rather than a quick return trip.

Canberra

go

Door to door: About 1 h by car

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime country city; the real risks are long, hot, exposed drives, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and black ice on winter mornings.
  • Summer days can pass 35 °C (95 °F) and winter nights drop below 0 °C (32 °F): pack layers either way.
  • Pubs on Auburn Street can be loud until late on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • The Hume Highway bypasses the city: if you are driving through, take an exit deliberately or you will miss the centre.
  • Regional trains and coaches need booking ahead; some services are a train plus a bus connection.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Belmore Park and Auburn Street, the cathedral and courthouse, the railway station and roundhouse, Rocky Hill lookout.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Big Merino, rail heritage centre, cathedral, waterworks museum) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Highway and hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
