Goulburn
Stop for one night, or two if you want the rail museum and a Bungonia walk: it is a highway town between Sydney (2 h 30 min) and Canberra (1 h).
Goulburn is a regional city of about 25,000 people on the Hume Highway, halfway between Sydney and Canberra. It was Australia's first inland city to be settled and keeps a compact heritage main street, a Gothic cathedral and a working rail roundhouse. Most travellers use it as a break in the drive, not as a destination in itself.

Get around
The main street is short and flat enough to walk; most heritage buildings sit within 15 minutes of Belmore Park. For anything outside the centre you need a car or taxi: local buses run to the suburbs but are geared to residents, not sights. Car hire desks are in town (check opening hours before you rely on them).

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days can pass 35 °C and winter nights drop below 0 °C: pack layers either way.
- Pubs on Auburn Street can be loud until late on Friday and Saturday nights.
- The Hume Highway bypasses the city: if you are driving through, take an exit deliberately or you will miss the centre.
- Regional trains and coaches need booking ahead; some services are a train plus a bus connection.
A quiet, low-crime country city; the real risks are long, hot, exposed drives, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and black ice on winter mornings.
