Burntisland is a small Fife coast town of about 6,600 people on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, 40 minutes by stopping train from Edinburgh. Its west side is industrial; the east side is a seaside strip with a beach, the Links park and a 1594 parish church. Most travellers come for a night or a coastal walk, not a full sightseeing programme.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Stagecoach Fife Bus 7 runs the coast road to Aberdour, Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy and Leven every 30 min Mon–Sat and hourly Sunday; Bay Travel B1 loops the town hourly. Trains from Burntisland station (south side, near the docks) run to Edinburgh and along the coast to Kirkcaldy and beyond.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real hazards are the tide on the shore path, slippery coal shards on the beach and the fast A921 if you walk east at high tide.
  • The beach carries natural coal washed from sea-bed outcrops; expect dark shards underfoot.
  • Walking east along the shore to Kinghorn only works at low tide; otherwise it's the busy A921 with a pavement.
  • Rossend Castle is a private office building: exterior only, no entry.
  • Inter-city trains rarely stop here; change at Edinburgh Waverley, Haymarket or Inverkeithing.
  • The station has no toilets.
