Aars is the biggest town in west Himmerland, population about 8,200, and a market town of roughly 150 years. Its draw is small and local: a Viking Age runestone in the churchyard, a cultural-history museum with a Per Kirkeby extension, a copy of the Gundestrup cauldron, and a 7 km planet trail on the old rail line to Blære. It works as a one-night stop between Aalborg and the Limfjord, not as a destination on its own.

Getting around

The centre is flat and small: churchyard, museum, park, cinema and main street are all within a 10–15 minute walk. Buses run from Aars Busterminal to Aalborg, Viborg, Hobro and villages in Vesthimmerland. For Rold Skov, Halkær Å or the resort at Farsø you want a car or a bike.

Safety

Aars is a quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are dark unlit paths and cycle tracks outside the centre at night, and winter ice on pavements. Emergency 112, non-emergency police 114.
  • No railway station: you reach Aars by bus, usually from Hobro or Aalborg.
  • Several sights are open on request or by pre-booking only — call ahead.
  • Small-town kitchens close early; after about 21:00 your options are limited.
  • Summer events at Messecenter and ALFA fill local rooms: book ahead.
