Doolin is not a village so much as a scatter of buildings along the coast road: the harbour and Fisher Street, Fitz's Cross a kilometre inland, Roadford another kilometre on. It is the closest settlement to the Cliffs of Moher and the main foot-passenger ferry point for the Aran Islands, and its four pubs play traditional music most nights. Most people sleep here one night, see the cliffs, and move on.

Getting around

Doolin is small but spread out: Fisher Street to Roadford is about 1.5 km, and the pier is a further 1 km. Walk it in daylight; after dark the road has no footpath in places, so take a torch. Bus Éireann route 350 links the harbour, the village, the Cliffs of Moher, Lahinch, Ennistymon and Ennis, and runs north to Ballyvaughan and Galway. A car makes the Burren and the cliff road far easier; there is no taxi rank, so book ahead.

Watch out

Safety

Doolin is a small, low-crime place; the real risks are the unfenced cliff edge, Atlantic wind and rain, and unlit roads after dark. Carry cash, tell someone your walking plan, and check ferry sailings before you commit to an island day.
  • No ATM in Doolin and several places take cash only: bring euros from Ennis or Lahinch.
  • The cliff-top path is unfenced and the wind is strong; stay back from the edge and do not walk it in poor visibility.
  • Doolin Pier ferries carry foot passengers only, and sailings are weather-dependent: check on the morning.
  • Doonagore Castle is a private home and closed to visitors; the lane past it is single-track with nowhere to park.
  • Book beds and pub tables in July and August, when the cliffs traffic fills the village.
