Djanet

Go for 5–7 nights if you want Sahara rock art and dunes; skip if you cannot arrange a licensed tour or fly in — it's 412 km (256 mi) from Illizi and the road is rough.

Djanet is the gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with Neolithic rock art and dramatic sandstone formations. The town itself is a small Tuareg settlement with a relaxed pace. Most travellers come on a multi-day desert tour arranged through a licensed agency, which handles permits, transport and camping. Without a tour, you are limited to the town and the immediate Erg Admer dunes.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Algeria ↗Most visitors need a visa arranged in advance through an Algerian consulate, often with a hotel booking or invitation; check the current rules for your passport with the consulate.
  • Algeria ↗Travel in the deep south (Tassili n'Ajjer, Hoggar) is generally done with a licensed local agency; check requirements before booking.
  • Algeria ↗Declare foreign currency on arrival if required and exchange only at banks or official bureaux; keep receipts.

Watch out

Safety

Djanet is safe for tourists who travel with a licensed agency. The main risks are heat, dehydration and getting lost in the desert without a guide. Police and gendarmerie checkpoints are common on the road from Illizi.
  • All desert travel requires a licensed guide and a permit from the park authorities — no independent trekking.
  • Cash only: no ATMs in Djanet (check). Bring enough dinars from Algiers or Tamanrasset.
  • Temperatures drop sharply at night in winter (near 0 °C (32 °F)); pack layers.
  • Mobile signal is weak or absent outside town.
