Djanet
Go for 5–7 nights if you want Sahara rock art and dunes; skip if you cannot arrange a licensed tour or fly in — it's 412 km from Illizi and the road is rough.
Djanet is the gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with Neolithic rock art and dramatic sandstone formations. The town itself is a small Tuareg settlement with a relaxed pace. Most travellers come on a multi-day desert tour arranged through a licensed agency, which handles permits, transport and camping. Without a tour, you are limited to the town and the immediate Erg Admer dunes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'salam'; hand on heart; avoid: Offering to shake a woman's hand first
- Dress: Long trousers and covered shoulders; avoid: Shorts in towns
- Checkpoints: Calm, patient, passport ready; avoid: Photos or arguing
- Hospitality: Accept coffee and dates; avoid: Rushing off
Scams and watch-outs
- All desert travel requires a licensed guide and a permit from the park authorities — no independent trekking.
- Cash only: no ATMs in Djanet (check). Bring enough dinars from Algiers or Tamanrasset.
- Temperatures drop sharply at night in winter (near 0 °C); pack layers.
- Mobile signal is weak or absent outside town.
Djanet is safe for tourists who travel with a licensed agency. The main risks are heat, dehydration and getting lost in the desert without a guide. Police and gendarmerie checkpoints are common on the road from Illizi.
