Base here 2–3 nights in winter for golf, El Paseo and the Living Desert; a car is required, and summer afternoons are for pools only.
Palm Desert sits in the Coachella Valley between Palm Springs and Indio, at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains. It is a resort and shopping town built around golf courses, spas and the El Paseo strip, with the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens as its one big family sight. Almost everything is spread along Highway 111, so a rental car decides how good your trip is. Winter is the season; summer is a heat problem.

Getting around
A car is close to essential: the city is spread along Highway 111 and the freeway, with long blocks and few sidewalks. Highway 111 links Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells and Indio but is slow with traffic lights; use I-10 for longer hops. The city runs free El Paseo Courtesy Carts along the shopping strip, which lets you park once and walk the whole stretch. Rideshare and taxis exist but are thin outside the centre.
