Tozeur is the western gateway to the Chott el-Djerid salt lake and the mountain oases near the Algerian border. The town itself is small and walkable: a brick medina, one of Tunisia's largest palm groves, and hotels along a single avenue. Two nights covers it; three if you add Douz or Ksar Ghilane. It is a winter destination, not a summer one.

Getting around

The centre, medina and palmeraie are walkable; the palmeraie is large enough that a bicycle is the better tool. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the price before you get in — a short hop is around 2 DT. Louages and buses leave from the station near the centre for Douz, Gafsa and Nefta. Car rental agencies sit on Avenue Farhat Hached and the Route touristique and mostly take bookings by phone.

Seats sold per person, roughly 30–35 DT; a whole 4x4 for four or more people is about 120–150 DT. The drive into the Atlas is the highlight.

Chott el-Djerid salt lake

Dry most of the year; go at sunrise or sunset for the colour. Any Douz-bound drive crosses it.

Watch out

Safety

Tozeur is calm and the medina is relaxed; the practical risks are unmetered taxis, summer heat and the border-zone advisory on the Chebika–Mides road, which can affect your insurance.
  • Taxis have no meters: fix the fare before departure or you will argue at the end.
  • Summer heat is the real hazard — plan walks before 10:00 and after 17:00, and carry more water than you think you need.
  • The Chebika–Tamerza–Mides road runs within about 1 km of the Algerian border; some governments advise against travel there, which can void insurance even though the area is calm. Check your own government's advice first.
  • If you book a 4x4 tour, pay half up front and get a written receipt listing seatbelts and an English-speaking driver; paying in full in advance often means promises are not delivered.
  • Alcohol is limited to tourist hotels and a few licensed spots; do not assume a restaurant serves it.
