Lagos de Moreno is a colonial town of about 112,000 people in the highlands of Jalisco, roughly 2.5 hours from Guadalajara and an hour from León on toll roads. It was a silver-and-cattle stop on the Camino Real and later a Cristero War setting. The draw is the compact centre: a main square, a twin-towered parish church from 1741, a 19th-century theatre and a market. One night covers it; two if you want a hacienda stay or horseback riding.

The historic centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. City buses and combis run along the main avenues between the centre and outer neighbourhoods; combis are the cheapest option. Taxis are plentiful and Uber and DiDi operate here.

Watch out

Safety

Lagos de Moreno is a normal working Mexican town, not a resort: the centre is calm by day and early evening, and the usual big-country rules apply after dark — stay in lit streets, use Uber or DiDi rather than hailing on the street, and keep to the toll roads at night. Check current state-level travel advice for Jalisco before you go.
  • Winter nights drop to around 3 °C and can fall below 0 °C; many budget hotels have no heating.
  • The wet season runs Jun–Oct, with Jul and Aug the wettest; afternoon roads and unpaved hacienda access get muddy.
  • Some hotels add a surcharge for credit cards; ask before you pay.
  • Toll roads (cuota) are the fast, safer option between Guadalajara, León and Aguascalientes; free roads are slower.
