Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
- Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
- Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
- Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
- Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.
Imola is a plain, working town of about 70,000 on the Via Emilia between Bologna and the Adriatic coast, 20 minutes by regional train from Bologna Centrale. Its name travels because of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, which hosts Formula One and other race weekends. Off race weekends the centre is quiet: a Roman-grid old town with a 12th-century cathedral, a Sforza fortress and a handful of museums, all walkable in half a day. It works as a one-night stop or a cheap base for Bologna, Faenza and Ravenna rather than as a destination in itself.

Arrive & move

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station to Duomo to Rocca Sforzesca is about 15–20 minutes on foot, south down via Dante Alighieri for the circuit. Regional trains run several times an hour along the Via Emilia (Bologna 20 min, Faenza, Forlì, Rimini, Ancona); intercity trains do not stop, so change in Bologna. TPER bus 101 links Bologna and Imola in about 75 min, every 15 min on weekdays and hourly at weekends. Buses 101 and 140 serve Piratello for the sanctuary. A car helps for Dozza and the surrounding hills; the A14 autostrada passes the town.

cautionDoor to door: About 30–40 min

Town centre (near the station and via Mazzini)
Best for one night without a car: station, Duomo, Rocca and the bar strip are all within a 15-min walk.
Near the circuit (Rivazza side)
Hotels by the track; only worth it on race weekends or if you are driving.

Watch out
Safety
- Race weekends fill every bed and road near the circuit: book months ahead or avoid those dates.
- Summer on the Po plain is hot and humid; plan indoor sights for midday.
- Small-town hours: many churches, museums and restaurants close one day a week and for long lunch breaks — check before you walk out.
- ZTL camera zones apply in Italian old towns; if you drive, park outside the centre.
- Regional trains only: intercity services skip Imola, so build in a change at Bologna.

- Airport-to-bed contract for BLQ: last regional train from Bologna to Imola, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
- Race-weekend fixture: circuit dates, bed scarcity and road closures, so gates A–D can go green.
- Walking cluster with rescue anchors: station, Duomo and piazza Matteotti, Rocca Sforzesca, via Mazzini bars.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Duomo, Rocca Sforzesca, Museo di San Domenico, Palazzo Tozzoni) and eat pages with last orders.
