Imola
One night, or a day trip from Bologna (20 min by train). Go only for the circuit, the ceramics-and-palazzi centre, or a cheap rail base.
Imola is a plain, working town of about 70,000 on the Via Emilia between Bologna and the Adriatic coast, 20 minutes by regional train from Bologna Centrale. Its name travels because of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, which hosts Formula One and other race weekends. Off race weekends the centre is quiet: a Roman-grid old town with a 12th-century cathedral, a Sforza fortress and a handful of museums, all walkable in half a day. It works as a one-night stop or a cheap base for Bologna, Faenza and Ravenna rather than as a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is walkable: station to Duomo to Rocca Sforzesca is about 15–20 minutes on foot, south down via Dante Alighieri for the circuit. Regional trains run several times an hour along the Via Emilia (Bologna 20 min, Faenza, Forlì, Rimini, Ancona); intercity trains do not stop, so change in Bologna. TPER bus 101 links Bologna and Imola in about 75 min, every 15 min on weekdays and hourly at weekends. Buses 101 and 140 serve Piratello for the sanctuary. A car helps for Dozza and the surrounding hills; the A14 autostrada passes the town.
