  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Orangeville is a town of about 29,000 an hour's drive north of Toronto, the commercial hub of Dufferin County. Its own draw is small — a walkable Broadway downtown, a 273-seat theatre in the old town hall, and 54 tree sculptures along the boulevards — but it sits at the door of Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, Hockley Valley and the Niagara Escarpment, which is why most travellers sleep here rather than in Toronto.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: Broadway and First Street is the main crossing, and Highway 10 runs along the east side. Orangeville Transit runs three routes meeting at the Fourth Avenue transfer point every half hour (at :15 and :45), Monday–Friday 07:15–20:45 and Saturday 07:15–18:15, with no Sunday or holiday service; fares are fare-free at least until 21 July 2027. A car is the practical choice for Mono Cliffs, Hockley Valley and the Cheltenham Badlands.

Highway 10 corridor, big-box stores and the Best Western Plus; easiest for drivers arriving from Toronto.

Hockley Valley, outside town

Resort with ski, spa and golf; a few km out, so you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are rural roads at night, winter ice, and trail terrain at Mono Cliffs and the Badlands — stay on marked paths.
  • No Sunday or holiday public transit: plan around it or drive.
  • Trail parking at Mono Cliffs and the Cheltenham Badlands fills on fall weekends; arrive before 10:00.
  • Winter roads north of town ice up; Highway 10 is the main route and gets busy at ski hours.
  • Many downtown kitchens close between lunch and dinner: check hours before you walk over.
