Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Maesteg is a former iron and coal town at the head of the Llynfi Valley in Bridgend County Borough, about 20,600 people, and the English meaning of the name is 'fair field'. It is a working valley town, not a sightseeing town: the reason to come is the valley itself, the Llynfi and the hills above it, plus a cheap bed if you are visiting family or walking. Trains run hourly to Bridgend and Cardiff, so it works as a half-day or a one-night stop, not a trip on its own.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Maesteg station is a 2-minute walk from the centre and unstaffed; Ewenny Road and Garth stations also serve the town and are unstaffed. Buses leave from the bus station behind the town hall, mostly First Cymru, to Bridgend, Swansea via Port Talbot, Caerau Park, Llangynwyd and Cymmer. Taxis are the practical option for Llangynwyd and the valley villages.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train from Maesteg, hourly

Market town with the main rail junction and better shopping and eating.

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train from Maesteg via Bridgend, hourly

Castle, museum and the full city; a full day, and the last train back is early.

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Bus X3 to Port Talbot then onward, or train via Bridgend

Bus is direct to Port Talbot but slower than the rail route.

Port Talbot

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Bus X3 from Maesteg bus station

Useful for the coast and onward buses to Swansea.

Neath

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train via Bridgend, or bus to Port Talbot then train

Doable but the connection eats the day; go only if you have a reason.

Pontypridd

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Train via Bridgend and Cardiff, or road over the mountains

Better by car; rail means going round through Cardiff.

Barry

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train via Bridgend and Cardiff

Long for a day trip; combine with Cardiff instead.

Llantrisant

caution

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car via the A4063 (≈ US$5,500) and M4, or bus and train via Bridgend

Hilltop town with a market; awkward without a car.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Talbot Street / Commercial Street)

Walk to the station, bus station, shops and pubs; the only area with real choice of beds.

Bethania Street

Quiet residential street a few minutes from the centre; guesthouse beds here.

Llangynwyd

Village about 3 km south with two food pubs; stay here only if you have a car or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

A small valley town and generally safe by day; the real issues are steep, unlit lanes at night, winter ice on the high roads and patchy phone signal.
  • Trains are hourly and the station is unstaffed: buy before you board or use contactless where available.
  • Valley roads are narrow and steep; winter ice and fog are real hazards on the A4063 (≈ US$5,500) and the mountain roads.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the upper valley and on the hills.
  • Some pubs are cash-friendly but not all take card at the bar: carry a little cash.
  • Do not plan a late arrival: last trains and buses to the valley are early.

  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Maesteg Golf Club, the RFC and cricket grounds, Llangynwyd church) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Valley weather and transport fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
