Glen InnesGindaaydjin

Stay one night, two at most: the standing stones, the lookout and the history museum fill a day, and the national parks need a car and a full day each.

Glen Innes is a small New England town on the junction of the New England and Gwydir highways, halfway between Armidale and Tenterfield. It works as a one-night stop on a driving trip, with a Celtic monument, a district museum and a set of granite-country national parks 50–80 km east that reward a second night if you have a car.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are wildlife and unsealed roads on the national park drives, winter cold at night, and long gaps between fuel stops.
  • No local bus: without a car you are limited to the town and the coach stop.
  • Taxis must be booked ahead; do not count on one waiting at the rank.
  • Coach services run on alternating days and none on Sunday: check the timetable before you plan the day.
  • National park campgrounds need reservations and charge per vehicle per day.
  • Winter nights drop near or below freezing; summer days can pass 30 °C (86 °F).
