Comitán is a Pueblo Mágico in the Chiapas highlands at about 1,600 m, 2 hours by colectivo from San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is a working colonial town rather than a tourist set-piece: a topiary-filled zócalo, five small museums, a market culture built on butifarras and tamales, and the best road access to Tenam Puente, Cascadas El Chiflón and Lagunas de Montebello. Two nights covers the town and one nature day; three nights lets you add a second.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end; taxis are the fallback at night. Colectivos and minibuses run to Tzimol, Chiflón, Uninajab and Montebello from terminals on and near Boulevard Belisario Domínguez Sur. For the cenote and the lakes, a car or a booked tour saves the 3–4 km walk from the highway turn-off.

Maya pyramids and ball courts on a hill with open views; far quieter than Palenque. Go in the morning.

Watch out

Safety

Comitán is a calm, walkable highland town and the usual cautions apply: use taxis after dark, keep to the centre and markets, and check current Chiapas road and border advice before heading toward Tapachula or Guatemala.
  • Nights from Oct to Mar get genuinely cold at this altitude: bring a fleece, not just a T-shirt.
  • Colectivo departures to Uninajab and Chucumaltik are few (roughly 07:00, 12:00 and 16:00 out; 08:00, 13:00 and 17:00 back): confirm the day's times locally before you commit.
  • Some nature sites and the Tzimol canyoning operator have had dead or changed booking links: check before travelling.
  • At the waterfalls, swimming is allowed in some lower and middle pools but not under the falls themselves.
