Tulungagung is a regency in East Java, about 154 km southwest of Surabaya, and one of Indonesia's largest marble-producing areas. The town itself is a working provincial capital with a park and a museum; the sights that justify the trip — Majapahit-era temples, a Japanese-era tunnel-dam and a run of white-sand south-coast beaches — sit 15–40 km out and need a car or scooter. Most travellers pass through on the Surabaya–Malang–Blitar rail corridor and stay one or two nights.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No useful city transport for the sights: hire a car with driver or a scooter. Beaches at Pucanglaban and Tanggunggunung are 30–40 km from town on slow roads — allow 1–1.5 h each way. Trains and buses cover the inter-city legs.

Walk to the station, the aloon-aloon park and the main eating streets; the practical choice for one night.

Boyolangu and the south side of town

Closer to Candi Sanggrahan, the Wajakensis Museum and the Nangkula Park turn-off; needs a vehicle.

Pucanglaban (south coast)

Simple beach-side stays near Pacar and Lumbung beaches; very limited rooms, check before you commit.

Watch out

Safety

Tulungagung is a low-crime provincial town and normal precautions are enough. The real risks are the south-coast surf, scooter crashes on the beach roads, and heat on temple and beach walks with no shade.
  • South-coast beaches have strong surf and no lifeguards: stay out of the water unless locals say it is safe.
  • Roads to the beaches narrow and darken early; do not drive back after dusk on a scooter.
  • Marble shops quote per piece, not per kilo: agree the total and delivery before paying.
  • Some temples and the museum keep short hours and close on Sundays or public holidays: check before travelling out.
