Cantonment

Skip as a base: Cantonment is a 15-mile (25 km (16 mi)) northern suburb of Pensacola with one fish camp and a pizza place. Sleep in Pensacola and drive up for the river.

Cantonment is a small Escambia County community on US 29, 15 miles (25 km) north of Pensacola, between the Escambia and Perdido rivers at the county's narrowest point. It is named for Andrew Jackson's 1821 troop encampment and still runs a paper mill. There is almost no lodging and no sightseeing core: travellers come for river fishing, the fish camp and a cheap bed outside Pensacola.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: US 29 is a four-lane rural highway with no walkable centre, and the fish camp is about 3 miles (5 km) east of town. ECAT runs the Pensacola–Cantonment corridor but service is thin. Taxis and rideshare from Pensacola are possible but costly for the distance.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 25–35 min

Drive US 29 south, about 25 km (15 miles)

The region's real base: museums, downtown, restaurants and the airport.

Door to door: 45–60 min

US 29 south, then I-10 and the Pensacola Bay Bridge via Gulf Breeze

Small toll to enter the beach community; obey the posted speed limits through Gulf Breeze.

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

Drive south and west via Pensacola and Hwy 292

Quieter beaches, Big Lagoon State Recreation Area and the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Miltoncaution

Door to door: 40–50 min

US 29 south to I-10, then I-10 east past Pensacola; about 40 km (25 miles) total

Milton is east of Pensacola, so you drive south first, then east; small town with a seasonal festival, combine with a Blackwater River stop.

Door to door: 40–50 min

US 29 south to I-10, then Hwy 98 across the bay

Gateway to the beach; obey the posted speed limits.

Door to door: 1–1.25 h

US 29 south to I-10, then Hwy 98 east through Gulf Breeze

Another beach option east along the Santa Rosa coast.

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

I-10 east then Hwy 20 south

Too far for a half-day; only if you are already heading east.

US 29 corridor (Cantonment)

Highway motels and the Becks Lake fish camp; cheapest beds near Pensacola, but you need a car for everything.

Pensacola (base instead)

25 km (15 miles) south on US 29; hotels, restaurants and the airport. Most travellers sleep here and day-trip north.

Watch out

Safety

Low street-crime risk in a rural community; the real hazards are summer heat, storms and hurricane season, plus highway driving on US 29 and I-10.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; know your evacuation route and watch local alerts.
  • Summer heat and humidity with afternoon thunderstorms; carry water on the river.
  • Obey posted speed limits on US 29, I-10 and the Gulf Breeze stretch to Pensacola Beach; small-town police do enforce them.
  • Rural roads have no lighting and deer cross at dusk.
