Cantonment
Skip as a base: Cantonment is a 15-mile (25 km) northern suburb of Pensacola with one fish camp and a pizza place. Sleep in Pensacola and drive up for the river.
Cantonment is a small Escambia County community on US 29, 15 miles (25 km) north of Pensacola, between the Escambia and Perdido rivers at the county's narrowest point. It is named for Andrew Jackson's 1821 troop encampment and still runs a paper mill. There is almost no lodging and no sightseeing core: travellers come for river fishing, the fish camp and a cheap bed outside Pensacola.

Get around
A car is effectively required: US 29 is a four-lane rural highway with no walkable centre, and the fish camp is about 5 km (3 miles) east of town. ECAT runs the Pensacola–Cantonment corridor but service is thin. Taxis and rideshare from Pensacola are possible but costly for the distance.A car is effectively required: US 29 is a four-lane rural highway with no walkable centre, and the fish camp is about 3 miles (5 km) east of town. English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; know your evacuation route and watch local alerts.
- Summer heat and humidity with afternoon thunderstorms; carry water on the river.
- Obey posted speed limits on US 29, I-10 and the Gulf Breeze stretch to Pensacola Beach; small-town police do enforce them.
- Rural roads have no lighting and deer cross at dusk.
Low street-crime risk in a rural community; the real hazards are summer heat, storms and hurricane season, plus highway driving on US 29 and I-10.
