Carp
Go for one day, not a night: the Diefenbunker is the reason, 40 min by car from Ottawa. Sleep in Ottawa or Kanata unless you want a B&B village night.
Carp is a village of about 1,500 people inside Ottawa's city limits, 10 km north of Highway 417 exit 144. Its one big draw is the Diefenbunker, a four-storey Cold War bunker built 1959–1961 as the Central Emergency Government Headquarters and now a museum. Everything else — a Saturday farmers' market, a fall fair, a handful of pubs — is small and local. Come as a half-day or day trip from Ottawa; there is no public transport in the village.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
No public transit in Carp. Walk or bike the village — it is small enough to cover on foot. A car is needed for the Diefenbunker (about 8–10 min from the village centre on Carp Road) and for the surrounding townships. Taxis and rideshare from Kanata or Ottawa are possible but pricey; check availability before relying on one for the return.
