Carp
Go for one day, not a night: the Diefenbunker is the reason, 40 min by car from Ottawa. Sleep in Ottawa or Kanata unless you want a B&B village night.
Carp is a village of about 1,500 people inside Ottawa's city limits, 10 km north of Highway 417 exit 144. Its one big draw is the Diefenbunker, a four-storey Cold War bunker built 1959–1961 as the Central Emergency Government Headquarters and now a museum. Everything else — a Saturday farmers' market, a fall fair, a handful of pubs — is small and local. Come as a half-day or day trip from Ottawa; there is no public transport in the village.

Get around
No public transit in Carp. Walk or bike the village — it is small enough to cover on foot. A car is needed for the Diefenbunker (about 8–10 min from the village centre on Carp Road) and for the surrounding townships. Taxis and rideshare from Kanata or Ottawa are possible but pricey; check availability before relying on one for the return.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport in the village: without a car, plan the Diefenbunker as a taxi or rideshare round trip.
- The Diefenbunker is underground and cool — bring a sweater.
- Guided tours run at set times and can sell out; book ahead, especially weekends and summer.
- Village kitchens and shops close early; do not count on a late dinner.
- Winter driving on rural roads can be icy; check conditions before a day trip.
Very safe. The real risks are rural driving (ice, deer, dark roads), the lack of public transport if your ride falls through, and cold-weather exposure in winter — dress for it and keep a phone charged.
