Go for one night, two if you want the mineral-water spa: Dostoevsky's house, the Transfiguration monastery and a slow river town, 2 h by bus from Novgorod.
Staraya Russa is a small town in the centre of Novgorod Oblast, one of Russia's oldest, and the summer base where Dostoevsky wrote The Brothers Karamazov. It is a spa town too: the balneologic resort on mineral waters has drawn Russian visitors for over a century. Almost no international travellers come, so you get the Dostoevsky sights and the riverside streets largely to yourself. Come as a side trip from Novgorod, or as a stopover between Moscow or Valday and Pskov.

The town is walkable end to end in about 40 minutes. Buses 1, 4, 6 and 11 run from the station to the centre but are slow; walking is usually faster. Taxis are cheap and metered in theory — agree the price first.
