Messina sits on Sicily's north-east tip, a 20-minute ferry from the mainland and the rail link between the island and the rest of Italy. The 1908 earthquake and 1943 bombing left a mostly modern city, so the sights fit a single walking day: the cathedral and its clock tower, a handful of fountains and churches, and the hilltop viewpoints over the Strait. Most travellers sleep one night, or pass through on the way to Taormina, Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable: the station, the port and Piazza del Duomo are within about 15 minutes on foot. Use the tram or bus only for the northern ferry terminal 4 km up the coast, or for the Museo regionale and Torre Faro. ATM runs buses and trams through Piazza della Repubblica; single fare €1.20, day pass €2.60.

Watch out

Safety

Messina is a normal, safe Italian city by day; the real risks are summer heat, traffic around the port and station, and pickpockets on crowded ferries and trains. Keep bags zipped and watch the step when boarding.
  • Summer heat and humidity peak in July and August; plan the walking day for the morning.
  • Ferries land at two different terminals: the main port is central, the northern terminal is 4 km out and needs the tram or bus.
  • Some churches and the Museo regionale keep limited hours; check before you go.
  • Traffic and scooters around Piazza della Repubblica and the port roads.
