Messina
Give Messina one day on foot around Piazza del Duomo, then move on: it is a ferry and train gateway, not a base for more than one night.
Messina sits on Sicily's north-east tip, a 20-minute ferry from the mainland and the rail link between the island and the rest of Italy. The 1908 earthquake and 1943 bombing left a mostly modern city, so the sights fit a single walking day: the cathedral and its clock tower, a handful of fountains and churches, and the hilltop viewpoints over the Strait. Most travellers sleep one night, or pass through on the way to Taormina, Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.
