Ballarat is a former gold-rush boomtown 110 km north-west of Melbourne, reachable by train in about 1 h 20 min. Its draw is the 1850s mining heritage — Sovereign Hill, the Eureka story, Lydiard Street's Victorian streetscape — plus a botanic gardens and lake that make a second day easy. Two nights covers it without rushing; one night works if you only want Sovereign Hill.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Lydiard Street, Sturt Street, the gallery and the train station sit within 15 minutes on foot. Sovereign Hill and Lake Wendouree are 2–3 km out — use the CDC Victoria bus network (most routes every 30 min, sparser evenings and Sundays) or a car. You need a Myki card for local buses, the same card used in Melbourne. Taxis and rideshare cover the gaps.
