  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Uruguay ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Uruguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a Uruguayan consulate; ferry passengers from Buenos Aires clear both countries' immigration at the terminal.

Durazno is a small inland capital of about 35,000 people on Route 5, halfway between Montevideo and Rivera. It began as a crossing on the Yí River and its name means "peach". The centre is walkable in an hour; the reason to stop is the October festival season, the Rivera museum and the river beach, not a long list of sights.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: plaza to museum is about 5 minutes, plaza to the river beach about 20–25 minutes on foot. Taxis wait at the bus terminal and can be called locally; a car helps for the beach, the campground and the Santa Cristina hotel.

Watch out

Safety

Durazno is a quiet small city and feels safe by day; at night stay near the plaza and the terminal, keep to lit streets and take a taxi rather than walking far out after the bars close.
  • Sights keep short hours and some close without notice: confirm the museum and church before you build a day around them.
  • The zoo has been closed for long-term renovation: do not plan around it.
  • October festival dates shift each year and accommodation fills: book ahead or day-trip from Montevideo.
  • Summer afternoons on the river beach are hot and shade is limited; carry water.
  • Some listed restaurants and bars open late and irregularly: have a second option.
