Inverell is a farming and gemstone town of about 11,700 people on the Gwydir Highway in New England, known as the Sapphire City. It works as a one-night stop on a New England loop or as a two-night base for fossicking, Copeton Dam and the Myall Creek memorial. You need a car: the sights sit 25–85 km out of town and the railway closed in 1987.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town centre is walkable but Copeton Dam (37 km), Kwiambal (77 km) and Pindari Dam (83 km) are not. Inverell Taxis must be booked, not hailed, and airport runs need booking well ahead. Rental agencies are in town; check availability before you arrive.

Watch out

Safety

Inverell is a quiet country town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are driving: kangaroos and stock on rural roads at dusk and dawn, long gaps between fuel stops, and summer heat on walks with no phone signal.
  • No weekend flights: Link Airways serves Inverell on weekdays only, so a Saturday arrival means driving or a coach.
  • NSW TrainLink coaches stop at the Visitor Information Centre on Campbell Street, not at Windsong Travel on Byron Street; drivers take no payment, so book first.
  • The Grafton–Moree coach runs on alternating days and has no Sunday service.
  • Kings Plains campground has no mobile signal and no drinking water: bring both.
  • Summer heat and storms: carry water and avoid long walks after 11:00 in Dec–Feb.
  • Copeton Dam bans drones.
