Inverell

Give Inverell one night, two if you fossick or drive to Copeton Dam: it is a country-town base, not a destination in itself.

Inverell is a farming and gemstone town of about 11,700 people on the Gwydir Highway in New England, known as the Sapphire City. It works as a one-night stop on a New England loop or as a two-night base for fossicking, Copeton Dam and the Myall Creek memorial. You need a car: the sights sit 25–85 km out of town and the railway closed in 1987.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: the town centre is walkable but Copeton Dam (37 km), Kwiambal (77 km) and Pindari Dam (83 km) are not. Inverell Taxis must be booked, not hailed, and airport runs need booking well ahead. Rental agencies are in town; check availability before you arrive.
