Goiânia

Give Goiânia 1–2 nights as a stop between Brasília and the Cerrado parks, not a destination in itself: fly in, see the civic square and one park, eat well, move on.

Goiânia is the capital of Goiás and a planned city from 1933, laid out on a radial plan with Avenida Goiás crossing Avenida Anhanguera at the centre. It is a working city of about 1.4 million, not a sightseeing town: the draw is the art-deco civic core, a handful of parks and museums, and some of the best regional food in central Brazil. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop on the way to Brasília, Caldas Novas or the Chapada dos Veadeiros.

  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
  • Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.
  • Brazil ↗Keep your phone out of sight in the street and on beaches; phone theft is the most common crime against visitors in big cities.
  • Brazil ↗Carnival 2027 runs about 5–10 February (Tuesday 9 February; Salvador from 4 February): book Rio, Salvador and Recife/Olinda months ahead or avoid those dates.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but the city is spread out, so plan on Uber or 99 for most hops; a ride inside the central area is usually under R$20. Local buses are cheap but slow and confusing for a short stay. Taxis are metered and easy to find at malls and the airport.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Caldas Novas

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Bus or car on the BR-060/GO-020, about 170 km (106 mi) south

Hot-spring resort town; better as one or two nights than a return day.

Pirenópolis

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Bus or car via the GO-431, about 130 km (81 mi) northwest

Colonial town with waterfalls; needs a full day or a night.

Brasília

go

Door to door: 3–3.5 h

Nonstop bus from the Praça do Trabalhador terminal, about 3 h

Conventional bus around R$35 (check); the easiest onward leg.

Goiás Velho (city of Goiás)

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Bus or car west on the GO-070, about 140 km (87 mi)

The old colonial capital; a day trip is tight, one night is better.

Alto Paraíso de Goiás

overnight

Door to door: 3.5–4 h

Bus or car north via the GO-118, about 230 km (143 mi)

Base for the Chapada dos Veadeiros; too far for a day.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Setor Oeste

Between the civic square and Parque Vaca Brava; most mid-range and business hotels, walkable to restaurants.

Setor Bueno

Malls, bars and Goiânia Shopping; good for a night out, 10–15 min by car from the centre.

Setor Central

Cheapest beds and the bus station at Praça do Trabalhador; practical for one night, busier and rougher after dark.

Jardim Goiás

Around Shopping Flamboyant and Parque Flamboyant; newer hotels, quieter, needs a car or ride-hailing.

Watch out

Safety

Goiânia is fine by day in the centre and the Oeste and Bueno districts, but street theft is common around the Setor Central and the bus station. Carry a cheap phone, avoid empty parks after dark, and use Uber or 99 at night.
  • Street crime (phone snatching, bag theft) is a real risk in the Setor Central and around the bus station, especially after dark; take ride-hailing at night.
  • Do not walk the parks after dusk; Bosque dos Buritis and Parque Areião have had muggings.
  • The rainy season (Dec–Mar) brings short, heavy afternoon downpours and flooded roads.
  • Some museums and the zoo keep irregular hours or close without notice: check before you go.
