Sa Pa is a mountain town at 1,500 m below Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak (3,143 m). The town itself is a building site of hotels; the reason to come is the rice-terrace valleys of Mường Hoa and the Hmong, Dao and Giáy villages, walked with a guide from those villages. A cable car now runs to the Fansipan summit.
