Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Augsburg is a 2,000-year-old free imperial city 50 min by regional train from Munich, with Germany's third-largest old town, the world's oldest social housing and a UNESCO water system threaded through the streets. It is a half-day to one-day stop for most trips, best done as a night between Munich and the Romantic Road rather than a base.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Seven tram lines plus buses run about 04:30–00:30, with night buses Thursday–Sunday. Buy and stamp a ticket before boarding; a single is €5.80 and a 24-h ticket or family ticket is cheaper if you ride three or more times. The centre is flat and walkable, and the Bayern-Ticket covers city transport.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Altstadt / Rathausplatz

Walk to every sight; quietest nights, highest prices, book early for December.

Around Hauptbahnhof

Cheapest beds and 10 min on foot to the old town; some street noise at night.

Göggingen / Antonsviertel

Residential, tram to the centre in 10–15 min; good for drivers and longer stays.

Watch out

Safety

Augsburg is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around Königsplatz and the Hauptbahnhof at night, and cyclists on shared pavements. Keep to lit streets after midnight and carry a stamped ticket.
  • Riding without a stamped ticket carries a €60 (≈ US$70) fine and a police check.
  • Many museums close on Mondays; check each site before you plan the day.
  • Puppenkiste shows sell out — reserve ahead or ask the tourist office for returns.
  • The old town is small: don't book a hotel far out expecting a short walk.

  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Rathausplatz, Maximilianstraße, the cathedral quarter, and the textile quarter.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Rathaus, Fuggerei, Dom, Textilmuseum, Puppenkiste) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Christmas-market fixture with the Engelesspiel times so December arrivals can plan around it.
