Augsburg is a 2,000-year-old free imperial city 50 min by regional train from Munich, with Germany's third-largest old town, the world's oldest social housing and a UNESCO water system threaded through the streets. It is a half-day to one-day stop for most trips, best done as a night between Munich and the Romantic Road rather than a base.
