- South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
- South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
- South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
- Brazil ↗US, Canadian and Australian citizens need an e-visa (about US$81 — check) applied for online at the official VFS portal before travel; EU and UK citizens do not. Check your passport with Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking.
- Brazil ↗Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for many areas, including the Amazon and Pantanal; check with a travel clinic at least 10 days before travel.
- Brazil ↗Keep your phone out of sight in the street and on beaches; phone theft is the most common crime against visitors in big cities.
- Brazil ↗Carnival 2027 runs about 5–10 February (Tuesday 9 February; Salvador from 4 February): book Rio, Salvador and Recife/Olinda months ahead or avoid those dates.
Osasco is a city of about 650,000 people fully joined to São Paulo's west side, built on industry and a commuter rail line. It has a busy centre, a municipal market, a few parks and a theatre, but almost nothing that justifies a trip of its own. Most travellers pass through on the Line 8 train or use it as a cheaper bed near São Paulo's western districts.

Getting around
Line 8/Diamante (CPTM) runs from São Paulo's Júlio Prestes and Barra Funda through Osasco to Itapevi; Line 9/Esmeralda links the area to Santo Amaro and Grajaú. City buses use the Largo de Osasco and Amador Aguiar terminals. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap by US standards; walking is fine in the centre by day but distances between neighbourhoods are long.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 45–60 min
Line 8/Diamante from Osasco station to Barra Funda or Júlio Prestes, about 30–40 min
The reason most people are here: museums, food and nightlife are one train ride east.
Door to door: About 45–70 min
Road via the Rodoanel and Raposo Tavares; car or ride-hailing
Mostly a car trip; public transport is slow and indirect.
Barueri
goDoor to door: About 30 min
Line 8/Diamante west to Barueri, about 15–20 min
Easy rail hop if you are already on the line; Alphaville for business and shopping.
Guarulhos
cautionDoor to door: 1.5–2.5 h
Road via Rodoanel and Ayrton Senna; car or ride-hailing
Only worth it for GRU airport; traffic can double the time.

Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Centro (around Rua Antônio Agú and the station)
Walkable to the market, Calçadão and Line 8 station; budget and mid-range hotels, some very basic. Busy and not pretty at night.
Vila Yara / Avenida dos Autonomistas
Business hotels and the SuperShopping complex; easiest for work trips and taxi access.
Presidente Altino
Near the bus station and rail line; practical for early departures, few visitor sights.

Watch out
Safety
- Petty theft around the centre and station, especially after dark: keep phones out of sight.
- Traffic on the Castelo Branco, Anhanguera and Rodoanel is heavy at peak; add buffer time to any airport run.
- Some cheap central hotels are very basic; check recent photos before booking.
- Summer downpours (Dec–Mar) flood low streets near the Tietê quickly.
