Hattingen is a small Ruhr town with two things worth a detour: a medieval core of over 150 historic buildings that survived the war, and the Henrichshütte, a closed steelworks turned museum around a walkable blast furnace. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop from Essen or Bochum, or a full day if they add Blankenstein castle and the Ruhr valley. It is not a base for the region.

Getting around

The historic centre is small enough to walk; cobblestones in some alleys are rough underfoot. Buses and trams run roughly 05:00–00:00 on weekdays with shorter hours at weekends; single ride €3.60, to Essen or Bochum €7.40 (2025 VRR fares). Buy tickets at the machines at Hattingen Mitte, at the information office or from drivers (single and bike tickets only). Taxis wait under the pedestrian bridge at Hattingen Mitte.

Safety

Hattingen is a quiet, low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are uneven cobblestones, dark riverside and rail-trail paths after dusk, and resident-parking rules that get cars ticketed or towed.
  • Cobblestones in the old town alleys are uneven: wear shoes with grip.
  • Some residential streets are resident-parking only (Anwohner frei): read signs or you may be ticketed or towed.
  • The Flatiron House (Bügeleisenhaus) has been closed for renovation since 2021: check before you plan around it.
  • Blankenstein castle ruin is a partial reconstruction with a restaurant: check opening before a special trip.
