Give Hattingen one full day: the timber-frame old town takes 2 hours on foot, the Henrichshütte steel museum 2–3 hours, both 10 min apart by bus.
Hattingen is a small Ruhr town with two things worth a detour: a medieval core of over 150 historic buildings that survived the war, and the Henrichshütte, a closed steelworks turned museum around a walkable blast furnace. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop from Essen or Bochum, or a full day if they add Blankenstein castle and the Ruhr valley. It is not a base for the region.
