Wee Waa is a small Namoi River town in the western New England region, population about 2,080, and calls itself the Cotton Capital of Australia after the first commercial cotton crop was grown here in 1961. There is one museum, a swimming pool, a golf course and a handful of cafés. You need a car: there is no taxi and no local bus, and the nearest car rental is in Narrabri. Most travellers pass through on the Kamilaroi Highway or stop one night on the drive between Narrabri and Walgett.

Getting around

Private transport is essential. There is no taxi service and no local bus in Wee Waa, and the nearest car rental agency is in Narrabri, 42 km south-east. The town centre is small enough to walk — Rose Street holds the shops, cafés and pub — but the museum, the golf club and the bore baths are spread out and need a car. Fuel up in town: the Wee Waa Servo on the Kamilaroi Highway and the BP on Boolcarrol Road are the local options.

A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are long driving distances, unsealed roads after rain, summer heat and wildlife on the road at dusk. The hospital emergency department is open 24 hours.
