Boggabri is a small Namoi River town on the Kamilaroi Highway between Gunnedah and Narrabri, in wheat, wool and cotton country. It has a museum, an arts shed, a pub or two and a lookout with a story, and it works as a half-day break on a New England drive rather than a destination. The daily NSW TrainLink service to and from Sydney stops here, but once you are off the train you need your own wheels.

Getting around

Private transport is essential: there is no local bus and no taxi. The nearest car rental is in Narrabri, Gunnedah or Tamworth. The town centre is walkable in about 10 minutes end to end; everything else — Gins Leap, Barbers Lagoon, Deriah — needs a car.

Safety

A quiet country town and generally safe. The real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dusk: carry water, fill up before back roads and avoid driving at dawn and dusk.
  • No taxi and no local bus: without a car you are limited to the town centre.
  • Summer heat: plan walks and lookouts for early morning.
  • Fuel and mechanical help are limited; fill up in Gunnedah or Narrabri if you are heading into back roads.
  • Dripping Rock is four-wheel-drive access only and the waterfall is best after rain.
