  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
  • Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
  • South Africa ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Department of Home Affairs or a South African mission before booking; exemptions depend on nationality, and the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is optional for most visa-exempt visitors in 2026.
  • South Africa ↗Travelling with children: accompanied foreign children no longer need a birth certificate, but unaccompanied minors, South African children and some passports that omit parents' names still do; check with Home Affairs and your airline before you fly.
  • South Africa ↗Driving is on the left. If your licence is not in English or has no photo, get an International Driving Permit before you travel; rental companies also check it.
  • South Africa ↗National park gates open and close at fixed times; you must be inside your camp before the gate closes, and speed limits in parks are enforced.

Swellendam is one of South Africa's oldest European-founded towns, 240 km from Cape Town on the N2, with more than 50 provincial heritage sites and a compact, walkable centre. Most travellers use it as a one-night break on the Garden Route drive; two nights if you want a full hike in Marloth Nature Reserve or a morning in Bontebok National Park. There is no working railway station and no town bus network, so a car is the practical way in and around.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk in 15–20 minutes end to end. There is no public bus network; minibus taxis run from a stand in Tritchard Street behind the main shopping mall. For Bontebok, Marloth and De Hoop you need your own car.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Bontebok National Park

go

Door to door: About 15 min each way

Drive about 6 km south of town on the R319

Small, quiet park; the bontebok herd was brought back from about 17 animals in the 1930s. Go early for the birdlife and the river.

Marloth Nature Reserve

go

Door to door: About 10–15 min each way

Drive to the reserve office or the Duiwelsbos parking area on the southern slopes

Duiwelsbos waterfall is a short shaded walk; Twaalfuurkop is a 12 km, roughly 6 h ascent to 1,450 m. Start early in summer.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

overnight

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h each way

Drive via Bredasdorp on the R319 and gravel roads

Too far for a comfortable return day; whales Jun–Nov and long coastal walks. Sleep over or skip.

Witsand

caution

Door to door: About 1 h each way

Drive about 50 km south to the coast

Whale watching in season and a river mouth; check road conditions and the tide before committing.

Caledon

go

Door to door: About 45 min each way

N2 west, about 60 km

Hot springs and a quick leg-stretch stop on the way to or from Cape Town.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Historic centre (Drostdy, Swellengrebel and Voortrek streets)

Walk to the museum, restaurants and the oak-lined streets; best for a one-night stop.

N2 approach and town edge

Guesthouses with parking and quick highway access; quieter, but you drive to dinner.

Langeberg foothills south of town

Mountain views and trailheads on the doorstep; a car is required.

Watch out

Safety

Swellendam is a small, low-crime town by South African standards; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and smash-and-grab theft from parked cars. Walk the centre by day, drive after dark, and keep valuables out of sight.
  • There is no longer a tourism information office in town; use the local town directory or your accommodation for current listings.
  • Mountain weather changes fast: tell someone your route before hiking Marloth and carry water in summer.
  • Do not leave bags visible in a parked car, including at trailheads and picnic spots.
  • Fuel up in town before long N2 stretches; the next services can be far apart.
