Swellendam
Stop one night on the N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route: walk the Cape Dutch streets, then give Bontebok or Marloth a half day.
Swellendam is one of South Africa's oldest European-founded towns, 240 km from Cape Town on the N2, with more than 50 provincial heritage sites and a compact, walkable centre. Most travellers use it as a one-night break on the Garden Route drive; two nights if you want a full hike in Marloth Nature Reserve or a morning in Bontebok National Park. There is no working railway station and no town bus network, so a car is the practical way in and around.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk in 15–20 minutes end to end. There is no public bus network; minibus taxis run from a stand in Tritchard Street behind the main shopping mall. For Bontebok, Marloth and De Hoop you need your own car.

Swellendam is a small, low-crime town by South African standards; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and smash-and-grab theft from parked cars. Walk the centre by day, drive after dark, and keep valuables out of sight.
