Use Belgrade as an airport bed, not a base: 1 night before or after Yellowstone, 10 min from BZN. Base in Bozeman for sightseeing.

Belgrade sits on I-90 ten miles west of Bozeman and is the town that actually contains Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), even though the airport carries Bozeman's name. There is no old-town core to tour: Main Street and Jackrabbit Lane hold the services, and the reason to stop is a cheap bed close to an early flight or a late arrival. Everything else — museums, restaurants, Yellowstone access — is in Bozeman, 15–20 minutes east.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Arrive & move

Getting around

A car is the default: I-90 links Belgrade to Bozeman (about 10 mi / 15 min) and Three Forks, and Jackrabbit Lane and Main Street cover almost everything in town. BZN has rental desks and taxi or rideshare pickup; hotel shuttles run to the Jackrabbit Lane strip. Without a car you are limited to the airport strip and Main Street.

Bozeman

go

Door to door: 15–20 min

Livingston

go

Door to door: 40–45 min

I-90 east past Bozeman, about 35 mi

Historic Main Street and the Yellowstone River; pairs well with a Bozeman day.

Big Sky

go

Door to door: 50–60 min

US-191 south, about 45 mi

Skiing in winter, hiking and the Gallatin Canyon in summer; check winter pass conditions.

West Yellowstone

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

US-191 south through the Gallatin Canyon

Too far for a comfortable return day with park time; sleep in or near the park.

Gardiner

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

I-90 east, then US-89 south

North entrance to Yellowstone; a full day of driving otherwise.

Red Lodge

overnight

Door to door: 3–3.5 h

I-90 east to Columbus, then US-212 south

Beartooth Highway country; a separate trip, not a day return.

Jackrabbit Lane / airport strip

Chain motels 5–10 min from the terminal; the practical choice for a 6 a.m. departure.

Main Street (downtown Belgrade)

A few independent motels and cafés; walkable, quieter, 10–15 min from the terminal.

Bozeman (15–20 min east)

Stay here instead if you want restaurants, bars and a walkable downtown; add 20 min to airport runs.

Watch out

Safety

Belgrade is a low-crime small town; the real risks are winter driving on I-90 and US-191, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and long distances with no phone signal outside town.
  • Distances are in miles and drive times, not walk times: the airport strip is not walkable to downtown Belgrade.
  • Winter storms close or slow I-90 and US-191; check Montana road conditions before a ski or park day.
  • Yellowstone's west entrance is about 1.5 h away in good weather — do not treat Belgrade as a park base.
  • Hotel rates spike on Bozeman event and graduation weekends; book ahead.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for BZN: last shuttle and taxi options field-checked, plus a walk-in fallback for delayed arrivals.
  2. Two walking clusters with rescue anchors: the Jackrabbit Lane hotel strip and Main Street Belgrade.
  3. Place pages with verified hours for the Belgrade and Bozeman sights that actually justify a stop.
  4. Winter and storm fixtures so I-90 and US-191 closures show as live warnings, not footnotes.
