Madikeri (also Mercara) is the district town of Kodagu, 120 km west of Mysore and 136 km southeast of Mangalore, at about 1,150 m. It is a hill station built around a 17th-century fort, with coffee and pepper estates on every road out. Two nights covers the town and one estate or waterfall day; three nights lets you add Talakaveri or a trek. The nearest airport is Kannur (about 90 km), with Mangalore and Mysore as railheads.

Getting around

Madikeri has no railway station and no airport. Arrive by bus (KSRTC from Mysore, Mangalore or Bengaluru) or by car on State Highway 88. In town, autorickshaws and taxis are cheap and plentiful; local buses are sparse. Walking works within about 1 km of the main road. For Abbey Falls, Talakaveri, Kushalnagar or any estate, hire a car with driver for the day — negotiate the total before you set off.

Watch out

Safety

Madikeri is a small, calm hill town and generally safe for tourists, including solo women in the centre. The real risks are monsoon landslides and leeches, narrow hill roads after dark, and trekking without a permit or guide.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings heavy rain, leeches on trails and closed forest roads; check before any trek.
  • Bathing is not allowed at Abbey Falls and there are no toilets at the site.
  • At Nisargadhama, buy any elephant-ride ticket at the entrance counter — they are not sold inside.
  • Forest treks (Brahmagiri, Pushpagiri, Thadiyandamole) need permits and often a guide; do not start without checking.
  • Hill roads are narrow with blind bends; avoid driving yourself after dark.
