Meißen is the oldest town in Saxony, 36 minutes by S-Bahn from Dresden, and the place where European porcelain was first made. The old town sits on the west bank of the Elbe below a castle hill with the Albrechtsburg and the cathedral. Almost everything worth seeing is inside a 15-minute walk, so a day trip covers it; one night buys you an evening in the wine taverns.

Walk. The old town is compact but the climb to the Albrechtsburg is steep. Three urban bus lines (A, B, C) and a sightseeing route (E) cover the rest; all VVO tickets for tariff zone 50 work on buses, regional trains and most ferries.

- The old town is on the west bank: get off at Meißen-Altstadt, not Meißen station, if you are heading straight to the sights.
- The escalator to the upper town has been out of service for long stretches: check before you rely on it.
- Meißen wines are scarce and priced accordingly: ask for the glass price before ordering.
